MORE ABOUT JESUS

Text: Hebrews 13:20-21 February 24, 2008 AM

INTRODUCTION

ILLUS: Often at Christmas and Easter the news magazines and the TV news shows seek to answer: Who is Jesus? Sometimes they get it and sometimes they completely miss the truth. I came across book Living Biographies: Chapter on Jesus - no deity, one miracle, no resurrection. A time line and some quotes. Then this summary: “The greatest of Christ’s teachings is yet to be fulfilled: the building of a temple of world peace upon a foundation of fair play.” Huh???

WHO IS JESUS? We believe in THE LORD JESUS CHRIST: who is the second Person of the Triune God, the eternal Word and Only Begotten Son; that without any change in His divine Person, He became man by miracle of the Virgin Birth, thus to continue forever as both true God and true Man, one Person with two natures; that as Man He was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin; that as the perfect Lamb of God He gave Himself in death upon the cross, bearing there the sin of the world, and suffering its full penalty of divine wrath in our stead; that He arose from the grave in a glorified body; that as our great High Priest He ascended into Heaven, there to appear before the face of God as our Advocate and Intercessor.

HYMN: “More about Jesus would I know, More of His grace to others show, More of His saving fullness see, More of His love who died for me.” Preaching Series: “Timely Truths that Transform Us.” Two weeks on the Doctrine of Christ.

READ TEXT Hebrews 13:20-21.

  • Last week from verse 20: 4 roles Jesus needs to fulfill in your life: Savior, Life, Shepherd, and Lord. Has He? Is He?

  • Today verse 21: 2 resources Jesus supplies to us. The TRUTH of how Jesus is TRANSFORMS US. We need to start at the conclusion of the text...

“To whom be the glory forever and ever. AMEN.”

  • Life is not all about us. We are so selfish - we think, we want it to be all about “me, myself, and I.” Not that trinity, but the Holy Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

  • Everything is: “Of the Father, through the Son, by the Holy Spirit and unto the Father.” (New Scofield, 1046)

  • Our primary purpose in life is to Glorify God through Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit - next week.

  • Glorify God - Giving God the credit. Praise and Worship through Jesus.
    • ILLUS: Songs today: “There is Something about that Name, We will Glorify, He is Lord, In Christ Alone, and Victory in Jesus.”

  • Is your life all about honoring Jesus? Is He honored that you call Him “Savior”? Is He honored you call him “Lord”? Be honest...

  • When Jesus is our Savior and Shepherd, Life and Lord, He works in us in powerful ways to glorify God. Verse 21 shows 2 specific resources:

1. Jesus equips us to do God’s will

  • Wiersbe: “familiar word to the people then. To the doctor it means to set a broken bone, to a fisherman it means to mend a broken net, to a sailor it means to outfit a ship for a voyage. To a soldier it meant to ready an army for battle.” (Wiersbe, Exposition Commentary Vol. 2, p. 330)

  • Has Jesus mended anything broken in your life?
    • Relationship? Forgiven you? Repaired your testimony? Jesus sets our broken lives to we can walk by faith and run race successfully.

  • Has Jesus outfitted you for Christian living?
    • Utilize the Bible? Answer Prayer? Given you spiritual gifts? Opportunities for service? Jesus outfits us for life so we can survive the storms of life and arrive as a faithful servant in His presence.

  • Has Jesus prepared you for battle with the enemy?
    • Do you have the spiritual armor in place? Eph. 6. Can you resist temptation? Jesus prepares us for battle with the enemies of the world, the flesh, and the devil. We can win. Do you win?

  • We are equipped for life... Not left to scrounge around, fending for ourselves but empowered. We can actually live the Christian life. Doable!

  • This is the power of the cross AND the power of the resurrection... v. 20

  • These two verses are a prayer. Paul prays that God through Jesus would fully endow all the saints (you and me) with whatever grace and power we need to do God’s will - “every good thing” - nothing should be lacking.

  • The “will of God” is the moral will of God, that will is found in the Word of God, and we are to “do” them = obey God’s Word.
    • 1 Thess. 4:3 “For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality” 1 John 2:15-17: “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”

  • The unbeliever has no clue what the will of God really is, nor the power to do it. The believer even within himself has no clue or power - it comes from God through Jesus. You need Jesus in you to do God’s will.

  • You can actually live Christian life. With divine help, this is possible!

  • We naturally apply this individually, we need to also apply this corporately. We as a church are equipped for ministry - every person is important for this church to effectively worship and serve God. We as a church need to do God’s will. This is a supernatural ministry, there is more at work than what meets the eyes. Power of Christ is on display.
    • ILLUS: I hope missing church shows you how important this body is to you.

We help reach the world - support missionaries. Impressed by Bill and Karen Mutchler ministry in Asia. Gave love offering of $270.00. 5 Families donated $75.00 each for children’s blankets.

Mutchlers commented about the health of our church. Phil Bjorklund and Don Shaw said the same thing. God is at work through Jesus here.

Just scheduled Vince Trujillo for coming Easter Sunday March 23.

Marcella Warner on Mission Trip to Cabo on March 22.

  • Jesus the Savior, the Shepherd, Life, and Lord equips or empowers us to do God’s great will. Lord’s prayer: “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” can be powerfully answered in your life and our church.

2. Jesus works in us so we can please God

  • Jesus also works in us so that as we do God’s will we shall please God.

  • “pleasing God” = God receives pleasure in our faithfulness brought by Christ’s working in our life. We are approved by God, takes delight in us.
    • 1 John 3:22 “and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.”

    • Phil 2:13 “for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”
QUOTE: Steve Green sang 10 years ago - Delighted: “God is delighted in all He has done, nothing can end all the joy He’s begun. His children delight in Him through His own Son. God is delighted in all He has done.”

  • Do you delight God through Jesus? Does He take delight in your life? Or are there things in your life that grieve Him instead?
    • QUOTE: S.S.: “O be careful little eyes what you see... ears what you hear... tongue what you say... for the Father up above is looking down in love.”

  • Again, I applied this individually, but let us also apply this corporately as the Body of Christ. Are we pleasing God together? Does what we do here please God? Does God take delight in First Baptist Church, Colfax?

  • If we together obey the Word, if we find joy in our worship and service, if we do it unto the Lord, if our hearts are expressing love in Jesus name - God is delighted.

  • Jesus the Savior, the Shepherd, life, and Lord works in us so we can give God delight. Psalm 16:3: “As for the saints who are in the earth, They are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight.”

CONCLUSION

We are to do the will of God found in the Word of God. We are to please God in all we do so God is delighted in us. We are blessed beyond measure.

We sang earlier: “Victory in Jesus, my Savior, forever, He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood; He loved me ere I knew Him, and all my love is due Him, He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.”

WHAT CHRIST GAVE UP TO BE OUR SAVIOR?

He removed His royal robe to be wrapped in swaddling clothes.

He laid aside His royal scepter to walk the roads of Galilee.

He left the fellowship of the Father to mingle with a race of sin cursed men.

He who enjoyed abundance of heaven, suffered hunger, thirst, and weariness.

He gave up the Heavenly crown to receive a crown of thorns.

He left the throne of God’s right hand to accept the cross of Calvary.

He turned His back on the worship of angels to receive rejection of men.

He, who was beloved of the Father, experienced the hatred of the world.

NICENE CREED

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.

Who for us men and our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;

He suffered and was buried, and the third day rose again according to the Scripture, and ascended into heaven and sits on the right hand of the Father;

And He shall come again with glory to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

Council of Nicea, written 325 AD.
