INTRODUCTION
Part 2 of Deut. 6:4-9. Part 2. It is the great Jewish Confession of faith called the “Shema.”
From Hebrew word “Hear.” This paragraph was the foundation of theology and teaching in the Jewish family. Jesus
affirmed the greatest commandment in the law was stated in this Shema (Matt 22:36-38). It provides a framework for
Christians to establish a Godly family.
1. The Truth of God. vs. 4-6
- v. 4 Who is God and how do we relate to Him?
- “LORD” = Yahweh/Jehovah, "God" = Elohim
QUOTE: Baptist Confession of Faith 1689 - Doctrine of God, detailed three paragraph description of the nature of
God.
- v. 5 We are to love God with our whole being, body, soul and spirit. God affects every area of our life, thus
every part of our life should live in surrender and obedience to Him.
- The Bible begins with “In the beginning God...” and ends in the last chapter of Revelation with
“Worship God” (Rev. 22:9)
- What is your relationship with God? Do you love Him? Obey Him?
2. The Teaching of Godliness. vs.7-9
- The truth of God needs to be deep in our heart for our own godliness and so that we can teach our children to love God
and live for God.
- “diligently” to point, to pierce through, to sharpen, to whet, to enforce
- v. 7a NIV “Impress them on your children” NLT “Repeat them again and again to your children”
- 3 lessons I shared last week: First, to teach diligently takes hard work, not a passive job nor a let live life.
Secondly, it is the parent’s responsibility, the church can assist, be very careful if the state is involved.
Thirdly, it is not enough to teach your children to be good, you must teach them to be godly, to love God with their
whole being.
- vs. 7-9 gives examples of where to teach. In all circumstances: at home, walking around, going to bed, getting
up in the morning. Carry God’s word around, post them in your house.
- Now some practical application. Adapted from notes FBBS and Faith Biblical Counseling Ministries, “Intro to
Counseling: Biblical Parenting for the New Millennium” Class I took last summer.
