INTRODUCTION
Science is a wonderful subject. Science has yielded fantastic gifts that have improved medical care,
transportation, living standards, exploration, even entertainment (Wii). God has filled many people
with curiosity to discover the riches of this universe, many unknowingly showing evidence of the
glory of God. Science is greater appreciated when God is factored into the equations.
Many of the great scientists of old were men of God - Galileo, Copernicus, Sir Isaac Newton, Today
there are still Godly scientists in the arena who have factored God into their personal and
professional belief systems. How about you and I? I hope we are creationists, not Darwinian
evolutionists. And I sure want us to understand some basic scientific principles from a Biblical
viewpoint. The Bible does provide us with some foundational scientific knowledge and wisdom.
This list today is not an exhaustive or comprehensive list from the Bible. And I am not a scientist
- I don’t even play one on TV. But as a Christian, a preacher, who believes in the authority
and accuracy, inspiration and infallibly of the Bible - I marvel at the wonder of the Word of God as
it helps describe some of the wonders of the world we live in.
1. First Cause - Origins
- Genesis 1:1. First 2 chapters - God was the first cause. From nothing He
brought into being everything. That truth is explained elsewhere:
- Exodus 20:11 In the midst of the 4 of 10 Commands: “For in six days
the LORD made the heaven and the earth and all that is in them...”;
- Ezra prayed in Neh. 9:6 “You alone are the LORD. You have made the heavens,
The heaven of heavens with all their host, The earth and all that is on it, The seas and
all that is in them. You give life to all of them and the heavenly host bows down before
You.”
- Isaiah 42:5; “Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched
them out, Who spread out the earth and its offspring, Who gives breath to the people on
it and spirit to those who walk in it,”
- Paul spoke in Acts 17:24-25 “The God who made the world and all things in it,
since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is
He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all
people life and breath and all things;”
- Writer of Hebrews Heb. 11:3 “By faith we understand that the worlds were
prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are
visible.”
- Jesus affirmed in Mark 10:6 “But from the beginning of creation, God made them
male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and the two
shall become one flesh.” At the beginning of creation man was made. Jesus
quoted both Genesis 1 and 2. Evolution put man millions of years way at the end of the
process.
2. Astronomy
- Genesis 1:14-16 “lights” - stars, and two important great lights -
sun and moon - moon is a night reflection of the sun.
- How many stars? Jeremiah 33:22: “As the host of heaven cannot be counted and
the sand of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the descendants of David My
servant and the Levites who minister to Me.”
- The Truth Project quoted = 70 sextillion stars - 70 x 1021 power.
- A Moody science film used the number 10 octillion - 10 x 1028
- Our own Milky Way Galaxy is 100,000 light years in diameter, Light travels at 186,000
miles a second. There are maybe 100 million galaxies in known space. (God of
Creation, Moody)
- Isaiah 40:26 “Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these stars,
The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the
greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing.”
- Psalm 147:4, 5 “He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of
them. Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite.”
- Bible talks about the constellations - Job 38:31 “Can you bind the chains of
the Pleiades, Or loose the cords of Orion?”
- Psalm 8:3-4 “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon
and the stars, which You have ordained; What is man that You take thought of him, And
the son of man that You care for him?”
3. Circle of the earth
- Long before scientists discovered the earth was round, a sphere and not flat, the Bible
described it as such. Job. 26:7-10.
- Proverbs. 8:27 “When He established the heavens, I was there, When He
inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,”
- Isaiah 40:22 “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its
inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And
spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.”
4. Weather Patterns and Crop Production
- Genesis 8:22 Post flood life, we still live under this covenant.
- James 5:7 talks about the farmer and the early and late rains
- Matthew 13 - Parable of the sower - different types of soils, every farmer and
gardener knows that is true.
- Mark 4:26-29; 1 Cor. 15 The miracle of seed reproduction.
- Ecc 1:6-7 talks about the wind and the water cycle = precipitation, to seas, to
evaporation, to condensation back to precipitation.
5. Where oil comes from
- Genesis 7:19-24 The judgment of the flood provides fuel for today.
- All the dead things that were buried rapidly under layers of mud have formed coal and
oil. Fossil fuels. Today, rarely do animals and plants become fossils. God’s
handiwork in providing us oil is pretty slick.
QUOTE: Horizon’s Magazine, Rick Barry. Even in the judgment of the flood God
showed mercy and prepared the world for oil and coal.
6. Lifespan of mankind
- Psalm 90:10a “As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if
due to strength, eighty years...” An amazing average.
ILLUS: Look at family genetics. Take your medicine. Exercise, eat healthy. Still job
security for funeral homes.
7. The Power of the Blood
- Leviticus 17:11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given
it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls...”
- Blood is the marvelous life giving fluid. Average 5.5 - 6 quarts pumped throughout our
body by the heart. It takes about 23 seconds for the blood to make a round trip through
our body so that every cell is nourished and cleansed. 16,000 miles of blood vessels.
The heart pumps 4,000 gallons of blood a day. Heart beats 35 millions times yr. Your
heart pumps a million barrels of blood during the average lifetime — enough to
fill three super tankers.
- The blood carries nutrients for the body, helps fight germs and provides healing, also
carries away the waste products of our cell activity without contamination. Amazing.
- Yet while not only giving us life, it also carries the sentence of death. 1 Cor.
15:22 “For as in Adam all die.” Physical and spiritual death.
- Physical in that the blood within us eventually dies and our bodies die. Spiritually,
that blood poisoning of sin separates us also from the Holy God who created us, we are
dead in our trespasses and sins (Eph. 2:1).
- God has the remedy for our poisoned blood, poisoned with sin.
- Leviticus 17:11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given
it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason
of the life that makes atonement.”
- Hebrews 9:11-12 “But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things
to come...not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He
entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” 22
“...all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no
forgiveness”
- Col. 1:20 “and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made
peace through the blood of His cross;”
- The power of the Blood. And science shows us some amazing facts, but Christ provides an
amazing life changing, eternal life experience.
- Christ’s sacrifice goes beyond science and philosophy. It is history in fact all
of history revolves around the passion of Christ. His life for our life saves us from
our sins and the penalty of sin and death.
CONCLUSION
Today we remember the power of the blood as we observe the Lord’s Table, a custom ordained by
Christ Jesus Himself for us to remember the high cost of our free gift of salvation.
Jesus died on the cross to pay the high price for our sins, and He rose again bodily from the grave
to give us His new life. This memorial meal shows to us that complete surrender of Himself for us in
His broken body pictured in the broken bread and His shed blood pictured in the cup. Let partake as
the Body of Christ, for His blood is the ties that binds our hearts now and for eternity.
